It is Britain’s greatest global export but the English language could be banned from the heart of Europe after Brexit. English is the No 1 choice for EU institutions but no state other than the UK has registered it as its primary language. This means that its legal status will be removed when the country leaves, even though English is in everyday use in Ireland and Malta.

A senior MEP has said English would be dropped as an EU official language once the UK leaves the bloc, unless rules are changed. “If we don’t have the UK, we don’t have English,” Polish centre-right MEP Danuta Huebner told reporters in Brussels on Monday (27 June). Huebner chairs the European Parliament’s committee on constitutional affairs (AFCO). The committee oversees the parliament’s role on the UK’s exit from the European Union.

Danuta Hübner, the head of the European Parliament’s Constitutional Affairs Committee (AFCO), warned Monday that English will not be one of the European Union’s official languages after Britain leaves the EU. English is one of the EU’s 24 official languages because the U.K. identified it as its own official language, Hübner said. But as soon as Britain completes the process to leave the EU, English could lose its status.
